Each semester, our AED chapter strives to sponsor at least one philanthropy project or community service event.  Our members are expected to actively participate in the AED-sponsored community service events, and many of our members also elect to individually participate in other service projects in the Birmingham area.

For Spring 2009, AED sponsored a campus-wide competition for "pop tab" collection, benefiting the Ronald McDonald House.  For each pound of pop tabs collected, 57 cents goes to the Ronald MacDonald House, which supports children and their families.  Following the collection, AED members delivered the pop tabs and spent a day volunteering at the Birmingham Ronald McDonald House.  For more information on the Ronald McDonald House, visit this site!

For the Fall 2008, we raised $430 for "Alex's Lemonade Stand," a registered 501c3 charity.  In 2000, a 4 year old cancer patient named Alexandra Scott opened a lemonade stand in her front yard with the goal of raising money to find a cure for all kids with cancer. As word of Alex’s fundraising spread, donations poured in from around the world. Alex passed away in August of 2004, at the age of 8 but her legacy lives on through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer (www.alexslemonade.org).
* Thank you to everyone who volunteered or donated!!!

Also for Fall 2008, AED sponsored a children's book drive for Reach Out and Read. Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud in pediatric exam rooms across the nation (http://www.reachoutandread.org).
